Can we find metal-insulator transitions in 2-dimensional systems?

چکیده
It has been almost a quarter of a century since the belief of the non–existence metallic state or the non-occurrence of metal-insulator transition for a two–dimensional system in the zero magnetic field was accepted. Nevertheless, during the last decade atypical behavior in semiconductor samples suggested the possibility of those transitions in two dimensions. In this essay we will review some of the experiments that can evidence such transtions and the theoretical models proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Universal Scaling, Beta Function, and Metal-Insulator Transitions
We demonstrate a universal scaling form of longitudinal resistance in the quantum critical region of metal-insulator transitions. This is based on numerical results of three-dimensional Anderson transitions (with and without magnetic field), two-dimensional quantum Hall plateau to insulator transition, as well as experimental data of the recently discovered two-dimensional metal-insulator trans...
متن کاملMetallic and insulating states in two-dimensional C60-polymers
Variations in the band structures of the two-dimensional C60-polymers are studied, when π-conjugation conditions are changed. We investigate the rectangular and triangular polymers, in order to discuss metal-insulator transitions, using a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electronphonon interactions. We find that electronic structures change among directgap insulators and t...
متن کاملMetal-insulator transition in two- and three-dimensional logarithmic plasmas.
We consider the scaling of the mean square dipole moment in a plasma with logarithmic interactions in a two- and three-dimensional systems. In both cases, we establish the existence of a low-temperature regime where the mean square dipole moment does not scale with system size and a high-temperature regime where it does scale with system size. Thus, there is a nonanalytic change in the polariza...
متن کاملMetal-Insulator and Superconductor-Insulator Transitions in Correlated Electron Systems
Quantum transitions between the Mott insulator and metals by controlling filling in two-dimensional square lattice are characterized by a large dynamical exponent z = 4 where the origin of unusual metallic properties near the Mott insulator are ascribed to the proximity of the transition. The scaling near the transition indicates the formation of flat dispersion area due to singular momentum de...
متن کاملRedox chemistry and metal-insulator transitions intertwined in a nano-porous material.
Metal-organic frameworks are nano-porous adsorbents of relevance to gas separation and catalysis, and separation of oxygen from air is essential to diverse industrial applications. The ferrous salt of 2,5-dihydroxy-terephthalic acid, a metal-organic framework of the MOF74 family, can selectively adsorb oxygen in a manner that defies the classical picture: adsorption sites either do or do not sh...
